This emotional experience is not dissimilar to what a caregiver may go through if their child discloses that they have experienced dating violence. Given that trans youth experience disproportionately high levels of dating violence, it’s not uncommon that caregivers of trans youth will be called on to support their children through coming out both as trans and as a survivor of dating violence.

We believe that caregivers, at their core, want to provide love, safety, and care for their children- even if they don’t know how. Through vulnerable storytelling, honest reflection, and specific education; this workshop sets out to gently guide caregivers of trans youth survivors of dating violence beyond mere “acceptance” towards deep and meaningful love, compassion, and advocacy.

This workshop was created by shawndeez, Ph.D, (he/they) in collaboration with the National LGBTQ+ Institute on Intimate Partner Violence.

For accessibility and interpretation requests, please contact Keilani Garcia (she/they) at kgarcia@lalgbtcenter.org at least two weeks before the training date.

REGISTER

When a child comes out as transgender, many caregivers experience a complicated mix of fear, doubt, and grief.
