This year BWJP produced the film\u00a0<em>Preventable<\/em>\u00a0as part of our advocacy to save lives.\u00a0<em>Preventable\u00a0<\/em>demystifies what actually happens to survivors who are impacted by guns in their relationships when they reach out for help.<\/p>\n<p>Stephanie Smith is a survivor featured in the film. She talked about how she gave her abuser\u2019s gun to authorities, only to have them return it to him without question.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Smith said, \u201cI told them I feared for me and my kid&#8217;s life.\u00a0\u00a0After they returned the gun to him, it made me feel more hopeless because at that point they were giving him the ok to be violent&#8230;and have power over me again.\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What happened to Stephanie, and so many other victims and survivors, is preventable, but it takes everyone in our communities to engage in making change so survivors are respected and believed.<\/p>\n<p>The screening of\u00a0<em>Preventable<\/em>\u00a0is a powerful opportunity to reflect on the devastating intersection of domestic violence and firearms, and the urgent work still ahead.<\/p>\n<p><em>Preventable<\/em>\u00a0was underwritten by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and highlights the voices of survivors and the insights of experts. The film illustrates how lives are tragically changed when warning signs are missed\u2014and how your partnership with BWJP makes prevention possible.<\/p>\n<p>Following the 20-minute screening, attendees will join a panel discussion with the survivors featured in the film and leaders working at the forefront of prevention.<\/p>\n<p>Space in the virtual room is limited.
