Join Dr. Jennifer M. Miller from the University of Arkansas at Monticello for a comprehensive exploration of the criminal justice system designed to help victim advocates understand the system they help victims navigate. This in-depth presentation provides essential knowledge and practical insights to help advocates better support victims navigating complex legal processes. The presenter will explore how plea negotiations impact case resolution and what this means for victims, with analysis of famous cases and ethical considerations.  Participants will learn about sentencing guidelines, judicial decision-making, and the factors that influence case outcomes at both federal and state levels. By the end of the presentation, participants will understand the differences between jails and prisons, classification systems, community corrections, and the challenges faced by special populations. The presentation also covers critical data from both national and Arkansas sources, forensic mental health issues, and current reform efforts that impact victim advocacy work. Participants will gain valuable insights into the interconnected components of the justice system and develop strategies for more effective advocacy.
