Breaking the Cycle: Impacts of Historical Trauma on LGBTQ+ BIPOC Youth Survivors of Teen Dating Violence

Breaking the Cycle: Impacts of Historical Trauma on LGBTQ+ BIPOC Youth Survivors of Teen Dating Violence

LGBTQ+ communities, BIPOC communities, and those at the intersection of the two, have long endured discrimination and prejudice socially and legislatively. The impacts of those biases do not stay in the past. LGBTQ+ BIPOC youth today endure new manifestations of these biases while also carrying the historical trauma of their communities with them. For LGBTQ+ BIPOC youth who have survived teen dating violence (TDV), these historical traumas and current-day biases present unique barriers that impede them from accessing the most effective help.

This training will equip service providers working with LGBTQ+ BIPOC youth survivors of TDV with the tools and skills to connect historical trauma and implicit bias to the barriers that LGBTQ+ BIPOC youth survivors of TDV face; identify examples of implicit bias in LGBTQ+ BIPOC youth survivors of TDV and fellow service providers; and respond to bias from fellow service providers.

This workshop was created by Nitasha George, Director of Anti-Violence Services at In Our Own Voices, Inc.
